True 'home value' is made up of many factors ... location, condition, neighborhood environment, access to schools or shopping, recent sales activity and future trend indicators. 

You can visit any number of websites, such as Zillow or Trulia, to gain insight to home values.  While these sites have a great deal of worthwhile information, their algorithms mix several factors which actually mislead visitors when estimating home values.  Want proof?  Simply look at Zillow's "Zestimate" vs. actual selling prices which are also displayed.  The Zestimate can be as much as 8-10% in error.  This poses a real problem when you think you are submitting an offer to get the best 'deal' only to find you continually are being 'out bid' by other buyers.
